FAQs
Community solar is a clean energy option that brings the benefits of solar to renters, homeowners and other community members without the up-front costs of installing your own panels. Instead, solar panels are located at a nearby community solar project. You, your neighbors, friends and family can enroll with RooflessSolar to receive solar credits on your Central Maine Power electricity bill. With RooflessSolar, you'll receive a 20% discount on those solar credits, and you'll be supporting local, clean energy.
No. As far as we know, it’s one of the highest discounts currently offered in Maine for customers who enroll in a community solar farm. Most programs offer only 10% - 15%. RooflessSolar is offering a higher discount to support clean energy in our state.
Spaces are limited based on the capacity of our community solar projects. The solar energy produced is distributed among subscribers based on their average annual electricity usage.
Community solar credits reduce your electricity bill when you enroll in community solar and the credits are applied to your CMP bill.
Once you sign up, you’ll be allocated shares of community solar that will reduce the kilowatt hour (kWh) usage on your electricity bill and lower the amount you pay Central Maine Power. Then you receive a separate statement from RooflessSolar for the cost of those solar credits, discounted by 20%. So, you always pay less with community solar!
Whether you own or rent your apartment or home, you're eligible to participate in a community solar project and enjoy savings. No solar panel installation is necessary!
No, you don’t! The solar panels are all located at Maine community solar farms managed by RooflessSolar — not on your roof.
Community solar is a great option if you don’t already have solar panels on your property or if you aren’t enrolled in another community solar program.
Yes, Central Maine Power will remain your utility provider and will continue to send you a monthly electricity bill. If you are also using a third-party supplier (ESCO), you can keep them as well.
No, it’s FREE to enroll, with no upfront costs. If you choose to cancel for any reason, or move out of the eligible service area, there’s no penalty to cancel.
Yes! If you wish to cancel for any reason, simply give 90 days-notice and there are no cancellation fees. Please see your community solar agreement for additional terms and conditions.
You’ll save a guaranteed 20% on the solar credits applied to your Central Maine Power electricity bill – that’s $540 a year for the average CMP customer whose electricity bill is $250 a month. Your 20% discount never changes. Sign up once, save every month – cancel anytime with no penalty.
Your CMP bill will show a reduction from the solar credits allocated to your electricity account. Then you’ll receive a monthly statement from RooflessSolar listing your discounted cost for the solar credits and how much money you’ve saved.
Your Central Maine Power utility account number can be found on your electricity bill or by signing into your utility account online.
If you're enrolled in budget billing, you’ll continue to pay your fixed monthly rate to Central Maine Power as community solar credits accrue on your account. This means you may pay more up front each month — your fixed Central Maine Power payment plus the cost of solar credits — but your total electricity cost over time will be lower with your 20% RooflessSolar discount.
Here’s how it works:
1. Your fixed monthly payment to Central Maine Power remains the same each month based on your average past usage.
2. Solar credits are applied to your account, lowering your actual kWh of electricity used within that month. You’ll receive a separate statement from RooflessSolar for the value of these solar credits with your guaranteed 20% discount applied each month.
3. Your solar savings build up as a credit instead of lowering each monthly bill right away.
4. During an annual “true-up” with Central Maine Power, your future payments will be adjusted, or you’ll receive a credit based on the total value of the solar credits you’ve accrued as a RooflessSolar member, ensuring you always save money with community solar!
